Invert Spirituality

Indian mythology always talks about bhakti that is translated as Devotion or Spirituality. We talk about Bhakts or Devotees that preach their deities. It something like following a person and abiding his footsteps accordingly. Hindu Culture, on the contrary also sees some characters in the puranic and vedic stories that do entire opposite of this. They make their choices exactly opposite to their so called 'enemy'.

Image result for demons as bhaktsDevotion and Bhakti in Indian mythology is not simple but very complex. It is like an emotional bridge that connects the devotee to the deity and makes him thinks and chant deity name all the time. This connection that makes the devotee full of deity's can be known as Bhakti or Devotion. This takes many forms such as devotion of the friend (sakha bhaav), of the lover (madhurya bhaav), of the parent (vastsalya bhaav), of the servant (daasya bhaav). The most peculiar form of devotion is called reverse devotion, or devotion of the enemy. This is viparit-bhakti.

In Invert Spirituality or Reverse Devotion , the demon hates the deity so much that he thinks about the diety all the time and built up a psychological relationship that makes him rid of his liberations. He chants the name of the diety all the time (no matter in hatred), that makes him have place in the deities abode.

Many Hindu texts have such traces of Invert spirituality, Like in Ramayana , Ravana keeps thinking of Rama which makes him find place in Vakhunt (Rama's Abode) or Heaven. Although he is villain but shows heroism just by chanting Rama's name in Hatred. On the contrary, Hanuman does the same but in a more lovable and acceptable form. Bhagvat Purana, also have a character called Kansa who keeps on chanting the name of Krishna which makes him possess heroism and finally have a place in heaven.

This idea of reverse devotion transforms every character in a tale of God into a devotee of God. Some know it. Some do not. Hanuman knows it. Ravana does not. Uddhava knows it. Kansa does not.

Movie - OH MY GOD! (2012) also revolves around the same idea of invert spirituality in which the central character Kanji (Paresh Rawal) who is an atheist is always shown betraying god and his devotees. If you notice he is always shown saying " There is no god" or "God is fake". Kanji may be compared to characters like Ravana and Kansa, who keeps on chanting the name of deity in hatred.
In this movie too Kanji finally meets Krishna (Akshay Kumar) who at the end explains him the concept of Reverse Devotion or Invert Spirituality.

Oh my God! - Movie (2012)

Do you constantly think of a good person, and good things, whatever the motivation, or do you constantly think of a bad person, or a bad thing, whatever the motivation. So, if you think of God, in fear, or rage or prayer, you will attract God’s grace.
